Take Care of Your New Extensions

Take Care of Your New Extensions

Now that we’ve talked about how hair extensions can help you achieve the new hair of your dreams, it’s time to talk about how to care for them properly. Taking great care of your new extensions is essential, not only because you want that new investment to last, but because you also want to prevent damage to your natural hair. To ensure you get the most wear out of your new Hairtalk extensions, it’s important that you get into the habit of maintaining them like a pro.

Below, we will talk about the dos and don’ts when it comes to extension care.

Do: Switch to sulfate-free shampoo. While we recommend this for everyone, it's even more important to wash your extensions with only sulfate- or paraben-free shampoo, especially at the roots. Here at William Robert Salon, we recommend B3 Extension Care Trio to help you maintain your extensions.

Don’t: Over-wash. This might seem counter to intuition, but we recommend washing your hair less, and using a dry shampoo to absorb oils and make your hair feel and smell fresh in between washes. If you have hard or mineral intense water, it may deteriorate the extension bonds or the condition of the hair, so waiting longer between washes will help to counter this problem as well. Additionally, don’t sleep on wet hair. Once your hair extensions are completely dry, braid the hair or tie it into a loose ponytail before bed.

Do: Tame the tangles. Tangles are caused by the friction of your natural hair rubbing against your extensions. The best way to keep your hair tangle-free is to be sure to brush often. Brush your hair 2 to 3 times a day and before showering or getting your hair wet. Be sure to hold the roots of your hair with one hand while brushing in a downward motion with the other. Brush gently, and be particularly careful around the bonds.

Don’t: Over-use heat. Avoid using heat tools as much as possible. Just like with natural hair, too much mechanical heat will damage your extensions. When you do use heat tools, be sure to use a heat protectant first.
