Keeping Hair Extensions Healthy in the Winter

Keeping Hair Extensions Healthy in the Winter

While it may require a little more work to keep your hair extensions looking good during the winter, it’s easy when you know the best steps to protect your hair extensions. At William Robert Salon, we use Hairtalk® tape-in hair extensions

In order to properly take care of your hair extensions, you need to be sure to take care of your natural hair first and foremost. Here are some winter tips to ensure that both your hair extensions and natural hair are protected in the winter.

Switch Hair Products. Your hair will need extra moisture in the dry winter months than you did in the summer. Your William Robert stylist will give you recommendations on professional haircare products that will give you the moisture you need for both your natural hair and your hair extensions.

Ease up on the washings. Washing your hair daily will ultimately strip your hair and extensions of their natural oils. Although our hair extensions are 100% premium human Remy hair, they don’t have the ability to replace the stripped natural oils like your natural hair will, so wash your hair less often.

Reduce the use of heat styling tools. We understand how much you might rely on your styling tools to create that perfect look in between appointments. You don’t have to completely do without them – just reduce your usage and lower the temperature to avoid drying out and breaking both your hair and extensions. Even lowering the temperature on your blow dryer, straightener, or curling iron will preserve the condition of your hair.

Use specialized haircare products. Be sure to pay attention to professional products that are designed specifically for use on hair extensions. These can include heat protectants, deep conditioners, weekly masks, and other products to keep both your hair and extensions looking vibrant and healthy and feeling soft and manageable.

Properly brush your hair. Brushing your hair extensions the right way is key to helping them look beautiful and helping them last longer. Use a brush that is gentle to your extensions. When brushing your extensions, hold your hair roots to add support and start brushing below the bonds. Brush your hair and hair extensions going in a downward direction, following the natural direction of the hair.

Brushing helps to distribute the natural oils from the scalp down into the hair, adding moisture to both your natural hair and extensions.

Boost moisture indoors. The best way to keep your hair, extensions, and even your skin hydrated during the winter is by investing in a humidifier. The dry winter air outside combined with the dry heated indoor air can wreak havoc on your hair.

Protect your hair from winter damage. Many of us wear hats in the winter to keep warm and protect our hair. However, even the softest hat or beanie may cause frizz and lead to damage. Wrapping your hair in a silk scarf before putting on your hat or purchasing a beanie that has a silk liner will protect your hair from frizz, damage from rubbing, and that unsightly hat hair.

Don’t leave with wet hair. Going outside with wet hair can freeze your hair, leaving it prone to breakage and damage. Be sure both your natural hair and extensions are completely dry before leaving the house.

Ensuring that you have a good winter haircare regimen will go a long way toward keeping both your natural hair and hair extensions looking fresh and healthy during the cold winter months.
