Hair trends come and go quickly, especially hair color trends. However, some of the hair coloring techniques that have remained popular are ombre and balayage. Whether it’s because the results are great or that both can be customized to the look you want, it’s easy to get these two hair color trends confused with each other.
Beautiful Balayage
This is a “hand-painted” hair highlighting technique that originated in France but has gained popularity everywhere. Once you determine the shades that you’d like, your William Robert hair colorist expertly paints on the hair color using freehand to achieve a unique, natural look. Although it is a highlighting technique, the look is more natural than foil highlights. Foil highlighting is a great look too – but the highlighting effect is less subtle and shows off chunky highlights. Balayage highlights are definitely more subtle, giving your hair a natural, sun-kissed look or a color-melting look with different shades. This technique lends itself to not only the standard shades of brunette, blonde, and red. You can customize your hair color with balayage done in any palette to show off your unique personality.
Eye-Catching Ombre
Ombre, simply put, is the hair color technique of using a darker shade on top and using a lighter shade at the ends. Traditionally it’s been done as a stark contrast between the two colors, with the transition about mid-length. This trend has lasted a long time in the hair coloring world, and we are now starting to see it evolve into some new variations. Today, one variety of the ombre we’re seeing is called a “sombre”, or soft ombre effect. It’s the same type of look but with less contrast existing between the two colors. Another unique variation is a “reverse ombre”, which has a lighter shade on top and a darker shade to the ends. In the past, an ombre look has been a brunette/blonde combination, but we are seeing other colors becoming popular options. Different shades of reds are gaining popularity as is pairing brunette or blonde with a fantasy color – or even pairing two fantasy colors together for a total one-of-a-kind look. You’re in control of the finished look, which is why it’s such a popular trend that stays each season.
