Avoid Swimmers Hair this Summer

Avoid Swimmers Hair this Summer

There’s no doubt that a dip in the water is an amazing way to relax and get relief from the hottest of summer days, but chlorine and salt water can seriously mess up your hair. Chlorine strips away the natural oils on your hair, leaving it dry and brittle, while the salts in ocean water dry out your hair and damage the cuticle. While we believe there’s no such thing as too much swimming, we also recognize that these elements that come with it can leave our hair weak and susceptible to more damage. What’s a girl to do? Today, we’re here to talk about our top tips for reviving and avoiding damage to your precious strands this summer.

Soak it in. Much like a sponge, your hair strands can only hold so much water. With that in mind, you want it to soak up as much fresh water as possible. That way, it'll be too saturated to take on the damaging kind. Before you dip into the pool or ocean, saturate your hair with fresh water to lessen the amount of chlorine or salt water it can take in.

Create a shield. Think of this step as creating a damage control force-field for your hair. Apply a leave-in conditioner or conditioning spray to add extra protection. Conditioning your hair after you soak it with fresh water will further seal the fresh water into your hair.

Cap it. If you’re opting to swim indoors, put a cap on your hair. Indoor pools tend to have higher levels of chlorine than outdoor pools, so the opportunity for damage is much higher. In addition, if you’ve followed the steps above, the cap will keep the fresh water and conditioner in and the chlorine out.

Rinse it. There’s no need for a full shampoo here, but you really should rinse your hair with fresh water as soon as you exit the swimming hole. If you wait, the water will eventually evaporate and leave behind high concentrations of chlorine and salts on your hair. After rinsing, apply a heavy conditioner or oil from your ears down to your ends to replenish any lost moisture. We recommend coconut oil, which has been shown to protect hair from bleach-induced protein loss.
